Arsenal will offer midfielder Lucas Torreira a new contract, according to reports in the Italian media.

The Uruguayan international is believed to be a target for AC Milan this summer, with the Rossoneri’s new head coach Marco Giampaolo one of the player’s former managers.

However, the Gunners are keen to see off any bids from the Italian club by placing a new deal on the table to Torreira.

The 23-year-old still has four years to run on the contract he signed when he joined from Sampdoria last summer for £26m.

Torreira has expressed some misgivings about life in England, having struggled to adapt to the climate, but the player doesn’t appear to be angling for a move back to Italy.

A new deal would end any speculation about his future, though, and would ensure that AC Milan are forced to look elsewhere as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of next season.
