Arsenal are keen on signing Mainz holding midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin, according to reports in the English media.
The Gunners did pursue the Ivorian international last summer but they were unable to secure a deal for the anchor man.
It appears, however, the London club have not given up their pursuit with Gbamin still a primary target to help protect Unai Emery’s porous defence.
Gbamin won’t come cheap, though, with Mainz said to be demanding at least £40m for the midfielder.
The 23-year-old has been everpresent for the Bundesliga club so far this season, having missed just two of their 21 league games.
Gbamin was signed by Mainz from Lens for €5m two and a half years ago. He has five caps for Ivory Coast but also has a French passport after moving to France at an early age.
With the likes of Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi already at the club, a move for another defensive midfielder wouldn’t appear to be a priority, but it seems the Ivorian is indeed a summer target.
