Arsenal legend hails Guendouzi

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has given his views on new signing Matteo Guendouzi, who made his Gunners debut against Manchester City on Sunday despite only signing from second division French side Lorient this summer.

The Gunners slumped to a 2-0 defeat in Unai Emery’s first game in charge of the club, and despite the fact City were always going to prove a tough test, it’s fair to say Arsenal didn’t play well at all.

However, in a slightly surprising move, Emery handed a debut to 19-year-old midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, who was only signed for £7m this summer.

It was expected that the youngster would either slot into one of Arsenal’s youth teams or go back out on loan, but the Frenchman started – and started well.

And Gunners legend Ian Wright has hailed the youngster’s performance in his column for The Sun, saying that he was one of the biggest positives for Arsenal in the game.

Wright wrote: “Later on Sunday afternoon another less obvious new boy impressed me in Arsenal’s young midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, signed from the relative wilderness of Ligue 2 Lorient in France.

“Yes, he found it tough going at times against City but what impressed me was his attitude and effervescence.

“It would have been easy to hide — let’s face it, others in the Arsenal side did — but he was still demanding the ball, still showing and still battling to the end.

“Gunners fans left the Emirates desperately looking for positives after an opening loss and Guendouzi was the biggest one of all.”

Manager Unai Emery also made a few comments about the youngster after the game, saying he believes that the player will improve very quickly.

“It’s his first match here in the Premier League,” said Emery via the Metro. “He has personality and quality and if he is on the pitch he is improving very quickly.”
