Arsenal are very much in the race to snap up Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria, according to FussballTransfers.com.

The website claims that, while Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are keen on signing the Swiss international, the Gunners are “also involved.”

Zakaria has less than six months remaining on his contract, so he can talk to foreign clubs about a potential free transfer next summer, but it is believed that he could be available for €6m (£5m) to €7m (£6m) this month.

Whether Arsenal are trying to sign him in January, it is not clear, but manager Mikel Arteta has publicly expressed his desire to strengthen his midfield options.

Juventus’s Arthur has been heavily linked with a loan switch to the Emirates in recent days but the Brazilian won’t be let go unless Juve can find a replacement first. Zakaria could, therefore, be seen as a viable alternative.
