Arsenal Join United In Pursuit Of ‘New Bruno Fernandes’ After Scoring 15 Goals This Season

Arsenal are interested in Sporting Lisbon midfielder Pedro Goncalves, according to A Bola. The Portuguese tabloid claims the Gunners have joined Manchester United in keeping tabs on the 22-year-old.

The Portuguese Under 21 international has drawn comparisons with Bruno Fernandes, having taken his fellow countryman’s place in Sporting’s starting eleven.

Goncalves’ goals and assist record is comparable as well, having scored 15 goals and contributed five assists in all competitions this season. The midfielder generally plays as a no.10 but he has also been employed out wide so he would be a good fit for what Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is looking for.

His price tag may prove to be a stumbling block, though. Sporting are not believed to be willing to sell for below his €60m (£51m) release clause, and there is likely to be more clubs joining the race to sign him if he continues his current form

Liverpool have already been linked with Goncalves, in addition to United, so Arsenal would have to fight off a lot of competition for his signature.
