Arsenal handed huge boost in pursuit of Barcelona superstar

Arsenal have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta after the midfielder revealed he will leave the club at the end of the season.

A tearful Iniesta made the shock announcement at Barca’s training ground yesterday, bringing to an end a brilliant 16-year spell with the club.

“This is my last season here. This is a decision I have thought about for a very long time and have considered a lot, thinking about myself and my family,” Iniesta said.

“I understand that after 22 years here I know what it means to be a player for this team, which for me is the best in the world.”

Still regarded as one of the world’s most gifted midfield players, Iniesta in unlikely to be short of options come the summer.

A host of clubs from both the MLS and Chinese Super League have already asserted their interested in signing the veteran midfielder, while Manchester City are also understood to be interested.

However it is Arsenal who are the favourites to land the Spain international.

Iniesta’s former manager at Barcelona, Luis Enrique, is being hotly tipped to succeed Arsene Wenger when he leaves Arsenal at the end of the season, and if he does, Spanish news outlet AS reports Iniesta will follow.

The duo spent three years together at Barcelona, winning nine trophies together.
