Arsenal Eye Szczesny Replacement

Wojciech Szczesny established himself as Arsenal’s number one keeper after impressing in January 2011, when he deputized for the injured Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski. Many of his performances have been top notch since then and most believed Arsenal’s goalkeeping woes were finally over.

However, some of his displays this season have been inconsistent and not up to the mark and he has recently lost his place in the side to Fabianski, who has impressed and kept clean sheets in his past two matches.

Although Fabianski started a league game for the first time after more than a year and was assured in his display, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger doesn’t seem to fancy him as his first choice goalkeeper on a full-time basis. According to Metro, the Frenchman doesn’t see the 27-year-old as Szczesny’s long-term replacement and is reportedly in the market for a new first choice goalie.

Szczesny has recently come out and spoken about his frustrations towards the training regime prior to matches that has impacted his performances on the pitch. Wenger is reportedly unhappy with his fitness and cited ‘mental tiredness’ as the reason for his omission for Arsenal’s last two matches.

Wenger is thus on the lookout for a new ‘keeper in the summer and has earmarked a move for Swansea‘s Michel Vorm as Szczesny’s replacement. Vorm joined Swansea from Utretcht in the summer of 2011 and was instrumental in Swansea retaining top-flight status. He has already helped the club massively by keeping eight clean sheets this season.

Having recently signed a new contract with the Swans last September, the 29-year-old won’t be available at a cheap price. However, Arsenal have a transfer kitty of £70 million for the summer and are reportedly set to spend big to rejuvenate their squad.

Arsenal could face competition from Manchester United but are confident in landing the player by promising him first team football. They are also keeping tabs on Liverpool’s Pepe Reina and possibly Barcelona’s Victor Valdes but Vorm remains their number one target.
