Arsenal edging towards double-deal but can’t stop there

Arsenal are making waves in the transfer market this summer, with the Gunners having already signed Sead Kolasinac on a free-transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke and Arsene Wenger’s side are now said to be approaching two significant deals.

Widespread reports indicate Alexandre Lacazette is due to arrive this week in a club-record deal from Lyon, significantly bolstering the Gunners’ attacking options, and Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez is also reportedly set to follow the French striker to the Emirates Stadium.

Both signings would give Arsenal significant depth in attacking areas, with Lacazette likely to lead the line and Mahrez providing competition to the likes of Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi, but it’s clear the Gunners cannot end their spending here.

Wenger indicated prior to the transfer window’s opening that he was only eyeing around three transfers this summer, with Arsenal set to reach that tally if the two aforementioned deals go ahead. However, the Gunners are arguably still short compared to their rivals.

Arsenal’s midfield options may need bolstering as their is question marks regarding the back-up options the Gunners have to first-team duo Aaron Ramsey and Granit Xhaka, with the likes of Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin struggling to secure regular first-team openings.

Ageing quartet Santi Cazorla, Nacho Monreal, Petr Cech and Per Mertesacker may also need replacing in the coming years, which means Arsenal may have to look towards finding their successors immediately- especially with Cech, who has looked shaky in recent seasons.

Whilst the needs aren’t as desperate as previous years, the Gunners could still see their options depleted through injury next season and further depth is needed to ensure Arsene Wenger’s side remain competitive across all competitions.

Arsenal have a squad strong enough to potentially field two completely different line-ups on a weekly basis, with one side selected for the Europa League whilst the other competes in the Premier League, but injuries could cause Arsenal a wealth of problems.

There’s also the uncertain futures of many of their players to think about, with Alexis Sanchez yet to give a final decision on his future whilst Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is also heavily linked with an exit- and the likes of David Ospina, Kieran Gibbs, Theo Walcott, Lucas Perez and Olivier Giroud could also be on the move.

Any departure from the first-team this summer needs to be replaced in the first-team, especially if Alexis, Oxlade-Chamberlain or Giroud move on, so the Gunners need to keep their options open for the remainder of the transfer window.

Arsenal still continue to be linked with the services of Monaco’s starring duo Thomas Lemar and Kylian Mbappe but negotiating a deal with the French principality side is set to be problematic, meaning the Gunners need to find alternatives in case things don’t go their way.
