Arsenal complete another defensive signing!

Arsenal have officially completed the signing of Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

The Greek centre-back joins for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £16m, and pens a ‘long term’ deal at the club.

The 30-year-old made 186 appearances for the Bundesliga side and was a prominent figure in their team before joining the Gunners. He is also one of Greece’s top stars, having made 79 caps for his country.

He becomes Arsenal manager Unai Emery’s third signing since taking over from Arsene Wenger in May, with the new Gunners boss already signing defender Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer from Juventus and goalkeeper Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen.

Speaking on Arsenal’s official website, Papastathopoulos said: “I feel very good, everything is special.

“It is a beautiful moment and I am very happy that for the next years I will be here. Arsenal are one of the three biggest teams in the Premier League.

“I’m a normal defender. I like to defend. I like that my team doesn’t take goals. I like a zero in the defence and I will do everything to help to achieve this goal.

“They called me not every day but a lot of times telling me to come here.”
