Arsenal Close To Losing First Place In The Premier League

Arsenal were dominated by Southampton, a team whose level of motivation should have been no where near that of the Gunners who are fighting to win the Premier League. Even so, the Saints have more than likely robbed Wenger of his leading position as City are now just 2 points behind. If the Citizens manage to win against Tottenham, Arsenal will no longer be leaders.

The game started with an unexpected domination rate on behalf of Southampton who had their first chance after 8 minutes of play. Gallagher’s shot was nicely saved by Szczesny who looked quite angry at his defenders.

Arsenal failed to react which led to the Saints scoring their first goal of the game. Jose Fonte took advantage of Monreal’s superficial defending and got the ball passed an unprepared Szczesny who should have done better.

The game continued along the same line. The Gunners looked tired and failed to get their head into the game. Southampton had another great chance with 10 minutes to go until half-time. Gallagher could have made it 2-0, a score which would have not surprised anyone.

Wenger proved once again he is one of the best managers out there. Arsenal looked completely different after returning from the locker rooms. With only 3 minutes into the second half, Giroud got the equalizer.

There was a lot to see during the next 10 minutes. First Cazorla gave Arsenal the lead after a great assist by Ozil. Just 2 minutes after the Spaniard’s goal, Adam Lallana leveled the score.

Both teams had great chances to score until the end of the game. Southampton could have won it if you consider the fact that Flamini was sent off with 10 minutes to go. Szczesny made some great saves which could have easily cost Arsenal not only first but 2nd place too as far as the Premier League standings go.
