Arsenal Chasing Rising Dutch Star

Arsenal Chasing Rising Dutch Star

Arsenal fans have been crying out loud for the Gunners board to cut loose their supposed large transfer war chest and buy good quality players in order to replace the stars who have left.

Last season was Arsenal’s worst start to a season when they famously lost 8-2 to Manchester United but they miraculously overcame a ten point deficit in the closing stages to pip Spurs to third and land that all important Champions League place. This season is sounding pretty much the same, with Arsenal again set to end the season without silverware and needing to overcome a big point margin to enter the Champions League places.

But what has been different in the last two seasons one might ask? The Gunners have failed to effectively replace the backbone of their team, the seasoned professionals who know how to win in the Premier League. Podolski, Giroud, Arteta are all undeniably quality players, but not as good as Fabregas, Song, Nasri and Van Persie.

All three current Arsenal players mentioned above are above 26 years of age, so it’s not as if Wenger wanted to buy young to further develop and nurture them (in order to possibly sell them at a big profit, maybe?).

But it’s not all doom and gloom for the Gunners just yet. They have recently announced cash reserves of £123.3 million and it seems Wenger has decided he must spend big this summer to transform his squad. They may very well finish in the top 4 again this season, since they have the easiest run-in of their closest rivals.

Wenger is reportedly eyeing a defensive midfielder that can shield the vulnerable back four and who has the ability to play out from the back. And who better than Jordy Clasie, who at 21 years of age, has his best years ahead of him. Clasie, currently plays for Feyenoord and has had a superlative year, having already represented his nation three times despite his tender years. Arsenal fans have been longing for a ‘Vieira’ type of player, and it could get better for them as the Dutchman’s agent believes he is ‘the new Xavi’.

Clasie has an amazing football brain and ability to read situations on the field, but he will most probably need to bulk up if he desires to play in the Premier League as he is still developing. You can see him in action below.

He is a perfect Wenger buy, available for under £6 million and having his entire career in front of him. Arsenal have not had an established defensive midfielder since Song’s departure with Arteta filling in at that position. Arteta is already 30 and it seems certain Wenger will spend on a defence midfielder this summer. With Calsie’s stock going up by quite a few notches in the past few months, Wenger may need to convince him as to why Arsenal will be the best club as Spurs, Fiorentina and Inter Milan are rumoured to be interested as well.
