Arsenal is the most likely destination for Real Madrid attacking midfielder James Rodrguez, according to Marca. The Madrid based publication claim the Gunners have been interested in the Colombian for almost a year.

However, the 28-year-old’s preference, if he were to leave the Bernabeu, was either to stay in Spain or move to Italy, but both those avenues now seem to be closed.

Rodriguez’s best bet for remaining in La Liga was to make the switch to rivals Atletico Madrid, but Diego Simeone’s side are no longer interested in the player.

Interest from Italy came from Napoli but after Carlo Ancelotti’s departure form the Serie A side, that is no longer an option either.

It means Rodriguez only has offers from England, and specifically Arsenal. Everton were tipped as a potential destination because of Ancelotti’s appointment but Marca report that the Toffees have shown no interest.

Whether Gunners boss Mikel Arteta would want a player who sees a move to the Emirates as a last resort, it does seem doubtful, but the Colombian international may yet come around to the move.
