Arsenal Are Already Lining Up Douglas Luiz Alternative For January As Copa Libertadores Winner Is Targeted

Arsenal could well make a move for Palmeiras midfielder Danilo when the transfer window reopens in January, according to the Evening Standard.

The Gunners did make an enquiry for the Brazilian last week, but the approach was rejected with Palmeiras keen to keep him as they look to retain the Copa Libertadores title they won last November.

However, they are expected to be more open to letting Danilo leave in the New Year. With Mikel Arteta’s side having failed to land a midfielder on deadline day earlier this week, it could be something that the London club explore.

Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz was the number one target before the window shut on Thursday but a deal never looked close to being finalised, with a third and final bid of £25m being turned down.

Despite having a €100m (£86m) release clause, Danilo is unlikely to cost that much, although the Standard do warn that other European clubs may “make formal offers” for the 21-year-old in January as well. We shall see how things develop over the coming months.
