Arsenal And Spurs Set For Summer Transfer Battle Over 27 Year Old Swiss Star

Arsenal are interested in Newcastle centre-back Fabian Schar, according to the Mirror.

The Gunners will have to battle Tottenham for the Swiss international, with their London rivals also keen on the defender.

Schar joined the Magpies in the summer from Deportivo La Coruna for just £3m but has been in good form for Rafa Benitez’s side this season.

The 27-year-old barely featured during the opening months of the campaign but began to establish himself as a regular first-team player following an injury to captain Jamaal Lascelles at the start of November.

Playing in a three-man backline, Schar has helped Newcastle concede just 38 goals in 30 league games; the sixth best defensive record in the Premier League.

The Swiss star has previously been on Arsenal’s radar when he was at Basel, but the centre-half moved to Hoffenheim in 2015 before being offloaded to Deportivo in 2017.

Considering the Gunners will need to strengthen in defence this summer, and with a limited transfer budget, Schar may be seen as an affordable option by the London club.
