Arsenal are interested in signing Hertha Berlin midfielder Arne Maier, according to reports in the German media.

However, the Gunners will face competition for the 19-year-old with Manchester United also believed to be keeping tabs on the holding midfield player.

Maier only recently signed a new contract at Hertha. The teenager was given a four and a half year deal back in February, keeping him at the Olympiastadion until 2022.

He has been a regular in the Bundesliga club’s first team since November last year and he has started all three games in the league so far this season.

Maier’s talents have also been recognised at international level. He made his debut for Germany’s Under 21s earlier this month, coming on in the second half in the 3-0 friendly win over Mexico.

The midfielder then made his second substitute appearance a few days later, replacing Eduard Lowen in the 6-0 victory over Ireland in a European U21 Championship qualifier.
