Arsenal And Juventus Battle To Secure Serie A Defender With £31.6m Buyout Clause

Arsenal and Juventus are both prepared to pay Roma defender Kostas Manolas’s release clause, according to reports in Italy.

The Greek international is said to be available for €36m (£31.6m) with the Gunners looking to strengthen their defence ahead of next season.

Manolas has been part of a defence that has conceded 47 goals in 36 games this campaign, which isn’t much better than Arsenal’s Premier League defensive record.

However, the 27-year-old’s season has been disrupted by a succession of injuries that has meant he has had to sit out seven league fixtures over the last six months.

Whether the Gunners will make a move for Manolas, it remains to be seen. The London club have been linked with a number of centre-back targets such as Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti, Getafe’s Djene and Gremio’s Walter Kannemann in recent weeks.

The Roma defender wouldn’t be the cheapest option, but the combination of ability and experience may make him the best candidate.
