Arsenal 2 – 1 Burnley: Match Report

It was not a game for the faint of hart this one as Burnley nearly ended Arsenal’s title race. Everyone expected Chelsea to have an easy match vs Hull Cityso a win was mandatory this Sunday and what a win it was. The Gunners showed once again why they are one of the most popular teams in the world and why spirit is sometimes more important than individual skill. Tension levels were high even on the bench as the last few minutes of the game got Wenger sent to the stands.

Arsene Wenger

While he should have been more calculated knowing that the Chelsea game is close and a suspension would weigh in heavily, it is understandable to see even the calmest of managers explode when you get 7 minutes of extra time with one man sent off and a penalty ready to end your team’s title chances.

Fortunately, Arsenal showed they have a fighting spirit and Sanchez showed that regardless of the speculation surrounding his future at the Emirates, he is still 100% focused. This Sunday the entire team was relentless and fought their way towards 2nd place. They also sent a strong message to Chelsea who despite a 2-0 win against Hull, would have had serious trouble facing the Arsenal everyone saw today.

Aside from the moment when Coquelin gave Burnley the penalty, Arsenal’s defense also deserves a “thumbs up”. Mustafi, Koscielny, Gabriel and Monreal did a great job at defending Cech’s goal during the last minutes of the game thus showing they can handle pressure.

Two things should stick in people’s minds after this amazing game:

  1. Sanchez is world class and is indeed the kind of man that can win a game. Even though it has become a cliché to say that every decent player is the kind of player who can win you a game, the Chilean deserves this tag. He continues being involved in the most goals scored this Premier League season and now ranks 1st in the top scorer standings next to Chelsea’s Diego Costa who also found the net this Sunday.
  2. Arsenal have shown this season that they have it in them to come back from everything which means the title hopes are still alive. With positive results ahead of the Chelsea game, the Gunners could really recover the 8 point difference separating them from 1st

The Gunners head to Southampton for the 4th round of the FA Cup next Saturday and then face Watford with 3 days remaining after to prepare for Chelsea. Hopefully all will go well and they will have tons of momentum so a good result comes against Bayern as well as in the all important Chelsea Premier League match.
