Alex Song Thinks Arsenal Should Keep Faith With Wenger

Cameroon international and former Gunner Alex Song has leapt to the defence of his former manager, whose position has been under threat with some sections of Arsenal fans calling for his head.

The Gunners have yet to taste the glory in their new Emirates Stadium, and also face a big threat of qualifying for the Champions League next season. They have continuously offloaded their key players and have lost the likes of Samir Nasri, Cesc Fabregas and most recently, Robin van Persie last summer.

With no trophies to show for their attractive play over the last eight seasons, and with star players looking elsewhere to win silverware, fans feel a change in the managerial position is required.

Wenger has been at the managerial helm at Arsenal for the last 17 years, and is the second longest-serving manager at an English club behind Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United. However, there have been reports that the Frenchman is considering his position after reported interest shown in him by French moneybags PSG, who want to bring him back to his native France.

But Song, sold by Wenger last summer to Barcelona, believes that the 63-year-old is still the right man for the job. According to Sky Sports, Song believes that Arsenal should keep faith with their current manager, Arsene Wenger.

He said, “He’s the right man. I spent eight years with him and he’s just unbelievable. I still keep in touch with him and the last time I met him he was very happy. Hopefully he’ll stay longer at Arsenal because if they lose him today then they won’t be the same.”

Song joined Barcelona in a £15 million deal last August, but has struggled to find a place in the squad, often being utilised in the unfamiliar centre-back role. However, Wenger has urged his former player to work it out at Barcelona and give it another season. Despite the lack of game-time, Song feels that he is fortunate to play alongside the best player in the world, Lionel Messi.

He said, “It’s a pleasure to be here. Many people want to be here so I know I’m lucky to be here. It is different here than Arsenal. It’s not the same. Arsenal have very good players but Barcelona have the best player in the world – Lionel Messi – and that’s why the pace is different. We have quality players. I’m not saying Arsenal don’t have quality players because they do, but Barcelona are the best team in the world.”
