Alan Shearer Delivers His Verdict On Whether Arsenal Are Title Contenders

BBC pundit Alan Shearer still believes that Arsenal’s main aim this season should be Champions League qualification despite sitting top of the table after seven games played.

The Gunners have had an outstanding start but Shearer has cautioned fans that there are some big tests to come after the international break:

“I still think Arsenal’s main target is a return to the top four for the first time since 2016, and they have not done too much wrong so far. Their next two league games at the start of October, at home to Spurs and Liverpool, will tell us more about whether they can sustain this strong start but, right now, their fans will be enjoying what they are seeing.”

Shearer is right that supporters shouldn’t be getting too carried away, but their performances do suggest that they can compete with the very best teams in the Premier League at the moment.

It could be argued that even their one defeat against Manchester United was rather unfortunate, and you would back them to continue their excellent form when they face Tottenham on Saturday week.

There are concerns about squad depth which may come back to bite Mikel Arteta’s side in the second half of the season but that shouldn’t stop Arsenal fans from dreaming that this could be a very special year for their team.
