Agent Of £21m Rated Canadian Star Plays Down Arsenal Switch

The agent of Gent attacking midfielder Jonathan David has played down reports that the Canadian international could make a move to Arsenal in the summer.

Reports in the French press had claimed that the 20-year-old’s form had attracted the interest of the likes of the Gunners, Everton and Leicester, but speaking out about his client’s future, Nick Mavromaras said a move to the Premier League may well be too big a jump to make for the player:

“His final target is to play for one of the five best clubs in the world. But for now, we have to stay humble. The next step in his career can’t be too big. For example, Arsenal. There we speak about the top five in the Premier League.”

“The next step has to be an intelligent one. There, this would possibly be a step too big at the moment. The whole package has to be right. An intermediate step can be better sometimes.”

David has been in sensational form for Gent this campaign, having scored 22 goals and contributed 10 assists in 37 appearances, including a hat-trick in the 4-1 win over Sint-Truiden at the weekend.

Gent’s technical manager Michel Louwagie has already confirmed that the Belgian side turned down a sizeable offer in the January transfer window:

“A record bid was already on the table in January, but we declined that. Our goal is to keep this team together after the summer. We didn’t extend David’s contract until 2023 for nothing.

It suggests that they value David above the €25m (£21m) that Aston Villa paid for Club Brugges striker Wesley Moraes in the summer.
