A Look At The Arsenal Contracts Expiring in 2018

So much has been made about the future of Arsenal Wenger in recent weeks. The Frenchman, whose contract expiries at the end of the season, says his mind is made up. For some reason it’s being kept under wraps, but the fans will know one way or another in the not too distant future.

A recent run of poor form has only heightened the sense of anxiety around the Emirates, with the ‘Wenger Out’ crowd growing louder and louder, organising more and more marches, and even taking to the air to get their message out there.

As we know though, it’s not just the future of Arsene Wenger that is causing uncertainty amongst Arsenal fans. The futures of both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are far from certain, both of their contracts expire at the end of next season and there are fears that each could demand a transfer this summer.

However, with all the focus on the contracts of Wenger Ozil and Sanchez it’s easy to forget all the other players who’s contracts are expiring in 2018, of which there are 12 in total. Decisions will need to be made on all their futures so lets run the rule on who Arsenal should be looking to keep hold of, and who they should be looking to let go of this summer (while they can still get a fee).

Firstly, Arsenal should keep hold of Aaron Ramsey and Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain; both are regular internationals and are happy to play the squad game when required.

Ramsey can show so much more than he has this season, but he’s still a class act and not a player Arsenal should be looking to get rid of just yet – they have worse in his position.

Chamberlain has been one of Arsenal’s stand out players this season, the young Englishman is really starting to take his game to the next level. You can be sure the moneymen at Arsenal will be keen for him to sign on the dotted line sooner rather than later.

Next the players Arsenal should definitely let go of. Wojciech Szczesny is no longer required, and Carl Jenkinson, Per Mertesacker, Joel Campbell and Yaya Sanogo are not of the required quality to be in a title challenging squad.

Now for the interesting ones, the tough calls, should the following players be kept or should they be replaced? Santi Cazorla, Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere’s contracts are all expiring in 2018, you could make a case for keeping or selling each of them.

Cazorla is a fantastic player no doubt, but at 32-years-of-age and having a poor recent history with injuries (including being out for all of this season) you could make a case for Arsenal buying a top-class replacement and selling the Spaniard this summer.

Kieran Gibbs is a decent player, but he can’t get into the side ahead of Monreal, and Monreal isn’t exactly top-level either. It might be time for the Gunners to let Gibbs go and replace him with a younger player with genuine top-class potential.

Wilshere is a tough one; he’s been decent for Bournemouth this season without being a standout performer. He’s not really been outstanding for Arsenal across a whole season ever in his life either. However, there is top-class technical ability in his passing and dribbling when on form.

All the players mentioned in this article current deals are expiring in 2018. Decisions will need to be made on each of their Arsenal futures. Clearly the manager and board have a lot of thinking to do in the coming months.
