Why signing Pierre Emerick Aubameyang would be a waste of money

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang is without doubt on of Europe’s deadliest strikers.

Over the past four-and-a-half seasons with Borussia Dortmund, the Gabon international has registered a brilliant 141 goals in 212 appearances – 31 of those coming in the Bundesliga last season, making him the league’s top scorer ahead of the worldly Robert Lewandowski.

Such have been his performances over the past few seasons, he has become sought after property, with a host of Europe’s biggest clubs interest in signing the the 28-year-old striker, including Manchester City, Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Amongst those interested are Arsenal, who are thought to be keen on turning to Aubameyang to propel them up in the table after a poor start to the season.

Will the Dortmund star be the answer to the Gunners problems however? Put short and sweet, no. And here are three reasons why.

Alexandre Lacazette

Arsenal have already splashed a club record fee on a striker during the summer. And while he has eight goals to his name this season, he has for the most part proven ineffective – although through no fault of his own.

Arsene Wenger has taken the Frenchman in-and-out of the side, moved him around and simply just hasn’t utilised the former Lyon star by playing to his strengths. Instead of replacing the more than capable Lacazette only six months into his Emirates career – Wenger needs to work out how to get the best out of him. Thierry Henry’s first season at Arsenal was hardly a roaring success, imagine if Wenger had replaced him half way through the year?

Dismal Defence

Any neutral fan, and indeed Arsenal fan, will look at the Gunners squad and see where it needs improvement: in defence. While looking relatively solid in the wing back positions – Hector Bellerin and Sead Kolasinac have been solid this season – their back three leaves plenty to be admired.

Mohamded Elneny, Mathieu Debuchy and Nacho Monreal were the back three Mr Wenger threw together for a Europa League tie against Red Star Belgrade before the New Year, which is, quite frankly, embarassing. Shkodran Mustafi, Calum Chambers and Rob Holding are all too substandard – the £70 million that will likely be spent on Aubameyang could be put to use in far better ways.

Style

Much like Alexandre Lacazette, Aubameyang is a striker who likes to play off the last man, using his pace in behind to devastating effect.

Arsenal, whether rightly or wrongly, do not play this way. It is a huge factor in Lacazette’s so far ineffectiveness at The Emirates, so replace him with a man very similar in style and you are simply going to run into the same problem.

If Arsene Wenger is to spend his money on a striker this month, he may as well do so on someone who isn’t almost a carbon copy of his already floundering Frenchman.
