Appreciating Santi Cazorla

Appreciating Santi Cazorla

Before Santi Cazorla’s injury, Arsenal were solid and either beating teams easily or at least grinding out victories from draws. This was due mainly to the wonderful combination between Santi Cazorla and the other creative players. The play of Cazorla backed up by the stay at home nature of Coquelin helped Mesut Ozil wreak havoc on the opposition and Arsenal were on fire. Even Theo Walcott who has been very poor since the injury of Cazorla was scoring goals. Such was the combination of the Spaniard with French defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin that the fans had to coin a word out of their combination named Coqzorla.

Unfortunately in November, Cazorla sustained what was thought to be a minor injury but four months later, the Spaniard is still out with injury and only just returned to training with the first team. Such is the partnership of Cazorla with Coquelin that Arsenal’s title bid started crumbling once the Spaniard got injured and only got worse when Coquelin himself was injured.

Arsenal were strong favorites to win the league in November, the Gunners were on a strong run of good form. Unfortunately with Arsenal now 13 points behind Leicester City with five games to play for the Gunners, even the most positive person in the world agrees Arsenal will not win the league this season.

However, since the emergence of Mohamed Elneny Arsenal seem to finally have been able to find someone who can back-up or play with Coquelin but with Arsenal looking like they will be signing Granit Xhaka from Borussia Mönchengladbach it appears Wenger is covering a position he already has depth in.

Knowing Wenger and considering Cazorla is already 31 and will be 32 in December, it will not be a surprise if this season is Cazorla’s last season in Arsenal colours. This is not saying we should get rid of the Spaniard, I am in fact one of his biggest fans, however, he has been out for four months and there is a real chance he may not rediscover his form.

Personally, I think we should keep Cazorla for another season but I won’t be surprised if Wenger sells him in the summer. If I was to make the decision, I will by all means retain Cazorla for at least one more season as he can clearly still do the business as long as he regains his fitness.

Wenger should definitely keep Cazorla for one more season especially as Ramsey has shown over and over again that he is susceptible to injury.

Arsenal will always have injury problems in the course of a season, it has become a norm and keeping Cazorla and adding Xhaka to the team will only add depth to Arsenal’s chance of winning the Premier league next season or at least help the team in their bid to compete for the title till the end.
