Wilshere Suffers Ankle Strain In Insipid Arsenal Performance

Arsenal entered into their Champions League group stage match against Dortmund in buoyant mood after an impressive 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Saturday. They had beaten Dortmund at home at this same stage last season but they were thoroughly outclassed and extremely lucky not to lose by more than two goals this time around.

England international Jack Wilshere was back to his best against City but could not reproduce the same form with nearly all of his teammates having an off day. Things got worse for Arsenal, who already have defensive headaches, as Wilshere twisted his right ankle in the dying minutes of the defeat and could face a spell on the sidelines.

It is the same ankle which has troubled the 22-year-old in the past and Wenger was a concerned manager, according to the Daily Mail. He said, “It’s difficult to say how bad it is. Normally it would not be too bad but I am a bit cautious because of his history.”

Reflecting his thoughts on the match, Wenger said, “It was a difficult night. Dortmund were the better team. We had a disappointing performance. It is difficult to go into individual assessment of any player because as a team were not at the required level.”

“Still the paradox of the night is that we had very good chances to score first. We were caught on two counter-attacks. For the first, we lost the ball 80 metres from our goal. There were enough people to stop the goal. We were still three-against-one at the back. It’s difficult to understand how we conceded the goal.”

Well Wilshere is a doubt for the Villa game but if he can be passed fit it would be a big boost to the team and Jack apparently is confident he will recover in time.
