We’re Ozil The Moon
Well it was certainly a nail-biter of a day yesterday but the phrase “In Wenger We Trust” may start to become more popular again after Le Boss delivered on his assurances and pretty much addressed all of Arsenal’s most pressing needs – if you are a glass half full kind of guy.
Clearly, Wenger grabbed the headlines with his £42.4million purchase of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid. In Ozil Arsenal are getting one of the top ten players in the world. He is an attacking midfielder with vision to make the incisive pass, the ability to create real chances for his team-mates as well as being a very serious goal threat himself. He scored 19 goals in 105 appearances for Real and has 14 goals for his country in 47 appearances. Truly this is a killer signing as Ozil is really looking forward to working with Wenger.
Wenger had already added Mathieu Flamini and while it is not a glamorous signing, it does address the defensive midfield issue and offer Arsenal more depth in the centre of the team.
Many fans were hoping for Julio Cesar to be signed from QPR but Wenger signed another keeper to offer competition to Szczęsny and Fabianski. True to form he found a young up and coming keeper in Emiliano Viviano who has joined the Gunners on a year long deal from Palermo with a view to a permanent deal being agreed.
The need for a big name striker was felt by many but as usual Wenger danced to the beat of his own drum as clearly he feels Olivier Giroud has much more to offer as he has started the season in great form with 3 goals already in the League. Wenger’s faith in Giroud made him feel like another top striker was not needed and instead he just added Yaya Sanogo on a free from Auxerre. The young French striker has raw talent and may well have a bright future at the Emirates, as from what I saw from him against Fenerbahce was impressive – he linked up well with his team mates, won the ball in the air and held the ball up well. Other strikers started slowly at the Emirates and went on to great things (remember Henry).
So all in all, I am sure not everyone is happy but Wenger did the business yesterday and throughout the transfer window really as he has addressed the key issues of the team, signed a truly world class talent in Ozil and in so doing kept him from signing with Arsenal’s rivals like United. Le Boss is back, not that he ever left but let’s hope he gets the appreciation he deserves.
