Wenger: Wilshere has top-class potential

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has told the clubs official website that he believes Jack Wilshere will show his “top-class potential” with a consistent run of games.

The England international has attracted big attention from Premier League rivals Manchester City, and has been in good form during the Gunners’ pre-season campaign. The 23-year-old has struggled with injuries in the past, which has in many respects halted his progress.

Wenger has admitted his delight with Wilshere’s form, and has spoken about how he believes the player could become world class if he managed to have an extended run of games in the team.

“He’s a top-class player with a top-class potential,” the manager said.

“No matter how good you are in life, you need to have a consistent presence at the top.

“Today, what top-level sport doesn’t suffer is to be in and out because it’s too demanding physically [to stay in].”

“What you wish for Jack is that he can compete now for six months without any problem, or for a year without any problem, and then you will see the player we all know he is.”

Wilshere is said to have cut his summer holiday short in a bid to get on top of his fitness levels this summer, and in doing so hopes to cement a place in the starting XI ready for next season.

“I had a good end to the season and I just want to keep it going.” said Wilshere.

“That’s why I wanted to come back in early for pre-season because I felt I missed too much of last season and wanted to give myself the best opportunity to get fit.”
