Wenger Calling For Defensive Reinforcements

Arsene Wenger has called on Arsenal to make defensive signings in the up coming January transfer window, and the French manager is leaning towards Basel central defender Fabian Schar to provide the answer to their crisis at the back, according to the Daily Star.

Currently the longest serving manager in the Barclays Premier League, Wenger has been under tremendous pressure to get the club near the top three clubs, but the competitive nature of the Barclays Premier League has meant Chelsea have been in a class of their own so far with every other team fighting for second place. The Gunners have not been clinical in their finishing, and they have paid for the same through the course of the campaign. Injury to Olivier Giroud meant the attack depended primarily on summer signing Danny Welbeck. Wenger must be pleased about the performances of Alexis Sanchez, who has taken little time to settle into life in London. Sanchez joined the club from Barcelona, and has responded to criticism with consistent performances in all competitions.

Schar began his career at FC Will 1900 as a youth player in 1999, and eventually signed a professional contract with the club in 2009. After 52 appearances and 9 goals for the club, Schar was on his way to Basel, where he has established his place at centre back. The 22-year old has played 56 games for Basel, scoring 9 goals in the process.
