Vermaelen To Join van Persie At United?

Thomas Vermaelen could be joining his former Arsenal team mate Robin van Persie at Manchester United, after a report in Metro suggested the Belgian would prefer moving to Old Trafford than to Spain where Barcelona are potential buyers.

Arsenal have brought in three defensive players this summer to ensure Arsene Wenger has cover in all positions. This period inevitably brought an end to Bacary Sagna’s time at the club, as the full back joined Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City early on in the window. Sagna was replaced by compatriot and France international team mate Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United and Wenger added Calum Chambers from Southampton this week to back up the Frenchman. The Gunners have also signed Colombian international goalkeeper David Ospina, who impressed everyone with his performances in Brazil.

Vermaelen joined Arsenal in 2009 as a left sided centre back, but an achilles injury early on in the 2012-13 season meant the player would have to earn a starting spot on his return. Then new signing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny paired up to create a formidable partnership in the defence, leaving Vermaelen on the bench.

Even though Vermaelen remains the club captain after van Persie’s departure, the player cannot find a place in the first team, which could convince him to join Louis van Gaal at United.
