Should Arsenal Upgrade Giroud This Summer?

There have been a lot of rumors that Arsenal will be signing a new striker this summer. Most believed that there is no need to spend big on a third solution in the attack when the Gunners already have Giroud and Welbeck. Statistics show otherwise though as according to Metro, things could be improved by a lot up front. Despite the fact that the French international has been at a level of his own in front of goal most of the past years, he is still some way short of players like Diego Costa, Benzema, Higuain and many others. Giroud’s record looks more like the statistic sheet for a second striker or an attacking midfielder rather than the coveted number 9 everyone expects him to be. The transfer market will offer Wenger the chance to decide whether his compatriot will continue being the number one pick or a more clinical striker will be brought in to help Arsenal in their chase for glory.

The first thing about Giroud is that he is fairly slow compared to his teammates who can sometimes dazzle even the most accurate and quick of defenses. The second thing about Giroud is that he does not perform well against world-class opponents. There is no game to look back on and say how amazing the Frenchman was against Chelsea, Barcelona, Bayern, Dortmund or Real. The last thing that points towards the fact that a player like Higuain, who is available to transfer this summer, needs to come to the Emirates is Giroud’s lack of efficiency. Since moving to London he has yet to score more than 16 goals in a Premier League season which is kind of disappointing.
