Should Arsenal Sign Mario Gotze?

There have been numerous reports like this one from the Express in recent weeks that Germany national team midfielder Mario Gotze could be leaving Bayern Munich this summer and coming to Liverpool or Arsenal. The world cup winner has been very vocal with his dissatisfaction with the way his career with Bayern Munich has panned out. The former Dortmund star was instrumental to Bayern in his first season with them but this term, after suffering an injury and spending four months on the sidelines, he has lost his place in manager Pep Guardiola’s team.

Although Jurgen Klopp who is the current Liverpool manager is said to be the forerunner for his signature, I think Wenger and Arsenal should be actively looking to sign the German. With Theo Walcott looking like he will never fulfill his potential with the Gunners and reports claiming he could be sold this summer, I think it will make perfect sense to bringing Mario Gotze as the Englishman’s replacement.

Theo Walcott is rumoured to be on his way to Liverpool which is good news for Arsenal as it will afford Arsenal the opportunity of beating them to the signing of Mario Gotze. Gotze is no doubt a better player than Theo Walcott and should Arsenal be able to bring in Gotze, it will be a major coup for the Gunners.

And to be fair, Liverpool have a little chance of beating Arsenal to his signing if the Gunners are interested. First, unless Liverpool wins the Europa League, they won’t be playing in the Champions League next season while Gotze will certainly want to continue to play in the Champions league which is something Liverpool can’t guarantee. In five seasons, Liverpool have been to the Champions league only once, while Arsenal have five over five in the last five seasons.

Also, with Liverpool may find it difficult to accommodate Gotze is his primary position on the wing.

Another thing that could work against Liverpool in the race for the signature of the German is his likely wage demands. According to reports, Liverpool will be reducing their wage bill unless they are in the Champions league next season. Wages is certainly not going to be a problem for Arsenal as the Gunners have finally relaxed their wage structure.
