Ospina Vs Szczesny – Who Should Back-up Cech

The Romans are not willing to make Szczesny’s move to Serie A permanent one according to Squawka. This means that the 25-year-old will have to return to the Premier League where he will be under contract with Arsenal until 2018. Since joining the Italians, the Poland international has averaged just under 1 goal per game and made 5 clean sheets in the domestic competition. That was not enough to convince Roma that he is worth a permanent transfer. That and probably the fact that Szczesny publically expressed his desire to come back to Emirates and become the number one pick. It`s hard to believe that will happen anytime soon as Cech is currently getting well-deserved praise from all directions. Most say he is what Arsenal were missing and others say he is in the top 3 transfers made in the Gunners’ recent history. He is consistent when it comes to performances and he offers a sense of security that neither Szczesny or Ospina could offer.

Even if the Poland international will be returning, it is difficult to tell if he will accept being used in the FA cup or just when Cech needs a rest. If Ospina is added to the equation things get even more complicated. Szczesny’s return will mean that this summer one if not both substitute keepers will leave. The Colombian was already rumored to be in talks for a transfer as early as this January. His status as a second choice is not something he will come to peace with. It`s the same with Szczesny who will not be sticking around for two more years just to see if he can extend his status as a substitute for a couple more years. Cech is now 33 and the way things are going, he will be around for at least 2-3 more seasons. Ospina is 27 and Szczesny is 25. Even if they are still young for their position, they are not that young as to waste 3 more years out of their career playing second fiddle.

Worst case scenario, both keepers are sold this summer for a profit and an investment of trust and capital is done in a young keeper who is willing to learn from Cech. Targets may include 19-year-old Simone Scuffet, 23-year-old Mattia Perin or 20-year-old Paul Nardi.
