Ospina Signs For Arsenal

Arsenal have been linked with the 25-year-old David Ospina for a number of weeks now as Arsene Wenger looks to find a rival for Wojciech Szczesny’s starting spot and a replacement for Lukas Fabianski, who left Arsenal to join Swansea City earlier in the summer.

It now seems that Ospina has finally signed on the dotted line and become a Gunner with The Guardian reporting that Arsenal have signed Ospina from Nice for an undislosed fee. Some sources have reported a fee of just £3 million which seems like a great deal for a player who will give Szczesny a genuine run for his money.

The shot-stopper was one of the standout goalkeepers at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. He helped Colombia reach the quarter finals and he kept two clean sheets along the way.

After a friendly match they were playing at Brentford, Ospina’s now former coach at Nice was asked about his move by Sky Sports News and Nice coach Claude Puel replied: “It’s confirmed, yes. It’s a good affair for Arsenal because he’s a very good player. You will see next season the quality of this player.

“It’s fantastic for him. It’s important for him to try another league, another club, and Arsenal is a fantastic club for him. David Ospina can take the goalkeeping position at Arsenal because his qualities are very strong and … ‘magnifique’.

“You saw in the World Cup how important a goalkeeper he is. For me, David can impose his quality, he’s a goalkeeper who is very good with the feet, with his arms, he knows football and he’s a very, very good player.”

Wenger has already signed Alexis Sanchez and Mathieu Debuchy from Barcelona and Newcastle respectively, and Ospina is Wenger’s third major summer signing. This is such an excellent signing as Ospina will push Szczesny hard creating serious competition for the goalkeeping position which will certainly strengthen the team.
