The 28-year-old Nacho Monreal has had to contend with some fierce criticism from the fans after some inconsistent display for the Gunners. He has played at centre-half in recent weeks due to defensive injuries and has been unable to convince that he deserves a starting spot week-in week-out.

Spanish reports are suggesting that Athletico Bilbao want to take Monreal off from Arsenal’s hands with a January bid, according to Metro. However, the Spaniard will reject any offer to leave the Emirates Stadium as he wants to see out his contract till 2017.

Wenger already has defensive headaches and so it is highly improbable that the Frenchman gives the green light for Monreal to exit. However, if he can recoup the £8 million he invested in Monreal in 2013, he could dip back into the transfer market and buy a replacement.
