Arguably the world’s greatest footballer, Lionel Messi, sounded out Arsenal at the end of last season to discuss a potential move after getting frustrated in contract talks with Barca.

Although Messi signed an extension in May, a move to Arsenal was on the cards which would have shocked the world had it gone through. Messi’s release clause is set at a ridiculous £197 million, which is nearly equal to Arsenal’s entire transfer history.

A report in the Daily Mail, suggests that Messi asked Fabregas to speak to his agent Darren Dien about a switch to the Emirates Stadium. At that time, Fabregas was locked in negotiations with Arsenal and Chelsea as he drew closer to the exit door and even Messi was discussing the same move.

It seems very unlikely now that Messi will join Arsenal. Only question Arsenal fans can ask now is what would have happened if he had really joined?
