Henry Defends Wenger’s Reluctance To Buy

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has defended Arsene Wenger’s poor transfer window, insisting that the Frenchman would have bought players in if they were available.

Wenger signed only Petr Cech this summer, the £10m former Chelsea goalkeeper – but despite fans being hugely satisfied with the Czech, they all cried out for a centre forward to come in as well.

Karim Benzema was hugely linked with a move to Arsenal, but any potential deal was soon quashed when the Real Madrid No.9 put all rumours to bed by publicly showing his desire to stay at the Spain capital.

Former Arsenal man Thierry Henry told Sky Sports News that he doesn’t believe his former boss wasn’t in for new players:

“I don’t know if the boss was after Benzema, but the player wants to come also”. said Henry.

“I don’t think he didn’t want to bring anyone in, but it in the end it didn’t happen.”

“It would be another story if he didn’t want to bring players in. He said if they can be done then i will try and bring someone.”

The Telegraph’s football correspondent, Jeremy Wilson, had other views about Wenger’s summer transfer window activity:

“The two most predictable features of transfer deadline day? Arsenal not adding to their squad and then the subsequent outpouring of dissent from many of their supporters.”

“Yes, Arsenal, one of only eight clubs in world football with a turnover above £300million, were also the only team among Europe’s major leagues not to sign a single senior outfield player this summer.”
