Could Wenger Leave Arsenal For England?

Arsenal’s veteran manager Arsene Wenger has been in the headlines all week long. However, this time it is for something other than his summer transfer business. The longest serving current Premier League manager has had his future in doubt at the Emirates for years, with sections of fans calling for him to resign – whilst others stick by him and agree he is one of the greatest managers to ever grace the game.

With England crashing out of Euro 2016 in embarrassing style at the hands of Iceland, they now find themselves without a manager after Roy Hodgson’s resignation. The bookies have their favourite to take over the England job in Gareth Southgate, but surprisingly, Wenger finds himself on the list of potential candidates for the job.

According to Tottenham and England legend Teddy Sheringham, Wenger would be perfect for the job and should look at retiring from club football and turning to the international game.

Wenger’s contract with Arsenal is up next summer, and there is no suggestion so far that he is up for a new deal.

“Wenger is under scrutiny for not winning things at Arsenal and people will disagree with me backing him for the England job, but you need a bit of everything in a football team.” Sheringham told Paddy Power.

“That blend is crucial. England have strength, passion, desire, hunger, and bullishness. They are strong-mindedness and resilient. But England need structure.”

“They need guile and finesse. This is why we’ve gone down the foreign manager route before – Fabio Capello had a 68% win rate, the highest for an England manager ever.”

“England don’t play with any kind of cleverness currently. When they fall behind they launch it into the channels and can’t wait to get away from their own goal, just like they do in the Premier League.”

“At this level you need to keep the ball and control games. That is what Arsene Wenger’s teams do.”
