Chambers Move Criticized By Southampton Icon Mick Channon

Arsenal signed Calum Chambers to become a back-up for Debuchy and the rest of the defense. Following the transfer, Southampton’s former forward and current horse racing trainer, Mick Channon who made more than 600 top flight appearances and scored over 200 goals, was harsh when commenting on the youngster’s decision and expressed his disappointment with both the club and the 19 year old. Channon pointed out that football is now all about the money and that making a name for yourself is a secondary goal.

The Gunners reached a deal with Southampton but did not reveal the terms. Even so it is only natural to see Chambers receive more money despite being brought in mainly as a squad player. According to talkSPORT, if Debuchy maintains the same level as last year when he played for Newcastle, Chambers will spend most of the entire season on the bench when he would have been a team regular for Southampton. His future status is not one which was not foreseeable considering the fact that Jenkinson is going out on loan which leaves only the 19 year old and Debuchy to fight for a spot in Wenger’s first team.

Southampton fans seem to agree with Channon who was worried about the youngster’s future. Even though Arsenal are an amazing team, it is not enough to just be part of a top end group. It is necessary for a player to face pressure and give it his all in important matches not only in training games. On the other hand, Arsenal have always been great with youngsters and have given them all the chances they need to grow and become team regulars so Chambers likely will continue to develop.
