Can Arsenal’s On-Loan Players Fill Squad Gaps?

Arsenal are in a very difficult situation few talk about. They have an extremely good squad that needs few adjustments. All positions are covered and if everyone stays fit, there isn’t much room for someone new to come in and be better than what we see from the Gunners on a weekly basis. They have been playing together for a while under the same amazing manager and they have learned what the Arsenal spirit is all about. Who would you replace looking at Wenger’s preferred starting eleven? The answer is not that obvious. Right now, it would be good to focus on keeping the current lot healthy and happy and results will surely come. What about the back-up plan though? What happens if Sanchez, Ozil, Walcott and Giroud are all injured? This is the question that fuels transfer rumors mostly, not the lack of talent. It also underlines the difficulty with which negotiations with important players take place. No one wants to come and be a substitute and few are so sure of themselves that they know 100% they can push away players like Giroud, Sanchez, Ramsey, Walcott, Bellerin and others.

There might be a solution for Arsenal, a solution that during the past couple of years produced players like Bellerin or Coquelin. Gnabry could also be mentioned but unfortunately, he decided to leave. Wenger called these guys back from loans to claim their place in the Gunners starting eleven and so they did. Why not continue down that path with what the club currently has playing for other teams:

There are a dozen footballers Wenger can recall from loans only a handful of which are worth mentioning at this point in time – the others have just turned 19 and most play in defensive positions which are now covered at Arsenal.

Jack Wilshere: The England international should be given a contract extension regardless of everything basically. He is a world-class act and even with all his health problems, he will always be able to contribute somehow to Arsenal’s performances.

Calum Chambers: He is quite versatile and he is pretty decent actually if not for the lack of experience and on pitch time. Everyone could see that in the Liverpool game at the beginning of the season. Since then, he is a team regular at Middlesbrough where he could really develop into a solid option for Wenger. One year spent there and he should be fit for Arsenal given he wants to stay of course.

Joel Campbell: Currently playing for Sporting, the Costa Rica International has struggled but has rarely disappointed. Again, you could see his lack of experience putting extra weight on his shoulders. He should be around though as Arsenal have started using Sanchez as a central striker and have only Iwobi left to cover the left-wing. Oxlade-Chamberlain and Walcott on the right, Iwobi and Campbell on the left and Sanchez, Giroud and Perez up front sounds like a decent set of alternatives for Wenger.

Takuma Asano: the Japanese international looks pretty good actually playing for Stuttgart but has trouble with his work permit which according to Squawka should be cleared in 2018. This guy should definitely be given a chance to play sooner or later.

These guys have the potential to help Arsenal a lot and maybe take some of the pressure that hits Wenger every transfer window. Hopefully they will stay healthy, fit and prove they weren’t brought to the Emirates just for numbers sake.
