Arsenal Win The Community Shield! Match Review and Player Ratings

At the fourteenth time of asking, Arsene Wenger has finally beaten Jose Mourinho in a game that will surely go down as a huge victory for the Gunners. Although the match is technically only a friendly, when there’s silverware involved such a term can hardly be used lightly.

Psychologically, Wenger will have dealt Chelsea and Mourinho a huge blow coming into the new season. Defeat at the hands of a side tipped to pip Chelsea to the title next season will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Blues.

Chelsea look like they need one or two more additions to the side before they’re really going to look as commanding as they did last term, and you could argue that Arsenal need a fresh face up-front.

Arsenal’s 1-0 win came courtesy of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s first half goal, and the 21-year-old scoring the winner was the icing on the cake for the Gunners, with the Ox having a brilliant pre-season, and surely a similar season in terms of form ahead!

Chelsea did push hard to break Arsenal, but the Gunners’ new goalkeeper Petr Cech (formally of Chelsea) ensured he did his all to keep his net untouched.

Here are the player ratings we believe the Arsenal side deserve following their victory. All scores are marked from 1-10:

Cech – 8

Bellerin – 6.5
Mertesacker – 7
Koscielny – 7.5
Monreal – 7

Ramsey – 7.5
Coquelin – 7
Cazorla – 7.5

Oxlade-Chamberlain – 8.5
Ozil – 7

Walcott – 7

Overall, it was a very good result for Arsenal, and one that will give them great confidence going into the new season!
