Arsenal To Target Low-Cost Defensive Solution

Arsenal To Target Low-Cost Defensive Solution

Arsenal are in need of targetting at least one central defender this winter. If Wenger plans on beating last year’s performance, he will definitely have to invest in some quality players. Unfortunately, few defenders will be available until the summer and there are several big clubs in need of quality in the heart of their defenses like Barca and Man Utd to mention but two. Even so, according to the Mirror, Wenger found one player that could help the Gunners with their defensive duties. West Ham’s Winston Reid has become a solution for the North Londoners who hope of bringing in the 26 year old center back as soon as possible. The New Zealand international will become a free agent in the summer which means buying him this winter is a possibility.

Reid has been scouted by Arsenal’s staff for weeks now which is probably one of the reasons West Ham’s player did not sign a contract extension. His current club is seeking to extend the defender’s agreement despite failing to reach common ground up until now.

If Wenger fails to convince Reid to come to the Emirates this winter, Arsenal have a back-up solution. Celtic’s Virgil Van Dijk has also been scouted for a while and might be a solution for the Gunners’ defense. The 23 year old center back has a similar profile to that of Reid and has shown a lot of impressive qualities over the past year. He is under contract with the Scottish side until 2017 though which might make him a bit more expensive and a bit harder to transfer during January.
