Arsenal Missed Out On Important Players Due To Tough Negotiations

Even though this summer was one of the busiest in the club’s history, Arsenal still failed to cover all the missing spots on the team. Losing Vermaelen was unexpected. Wenger had to search for a new central defender which ended up being a waste of time. With the Frenchman involved in all negotiation aspects, it was to be expected that some deals would not go through. Unfortunately, the window closed leaving Wenger with two key positions missing from the squad.

The first spot that needed to be filled is that currently covered by Arteta. The Spaniard, who was close to moving from North London this summer, is not quite what many fans have in mind to handle the defensive duties of the midfield. William Carvalho was, according to Metro, the one who should have taken over the empty spot which remained after Song joined Barcelona. Unfortunately, the 22 year old failed to agree with the Gunners as far as a salary goes. It is expected that Wenger will make another move during January especially after Carvalho chose not to sign a new contract with Sporting.

The second spot which is probably the most important was the one previously covered by Vermaelen. Kostas Manolas looked like the perfect replacement for the Belgium international who, just like Song and Fabregas, decided to join Barcelona. Unfortunately for Wenger, Roma outbid Arsenal who were almost certain they had secured Manolas.

The last player who Arsenal should have singed this summer is Marco Reus. The German international is one of the best players in Europe. He was keen on joining the Gunners but he will apparently join Real who are willing to outbid Wenger’s offer. Wenger will mow get to see exactly what he will be missing in the German as Arsenal will play his club, Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League group stages.
