Arsenal Legend Thinks Key Duo Must Get Bumper New Contracts

Former England and Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman enjoyed over a decade at the top of his game playing for Arsenal and he showed his class by helping to lead the Gunners to two doubles while with them. His accomplishments were recognised and celebrated when this past Wednesday night in Manchester, England he was inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame. Quite an accolade for a player.

Seaman has strong feelings about two of Arsenal’s star players – Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez – he believes it is key to Arsenal’s future that the two players are signed to long-term extensions as soon as possible. You don’t need to look far into the recent games to see evidence of how influential the pair are as on Wednesday night vs Ludogorets, Sanchez scored with an impeccably controlled lob and of course Ozil completed a brilliant second half hat-trick.

With both players’ deals due to run out in 2018 it would surely be prudent to tie down the dynamic duo now to mega new deals – paying what it takes to keep them happy- something Arsenal have been reluctant to do in the past as they have allowed a number of top players like Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy and Robin van Persie to leave rather than pay them the big money they deserved.

When Seaman was asked about whether Arsenal would need to break their precious wage structure to retain the duo as Gunners, he had this to say as reported by ESPNFC: “They will have to. These two are quality players so you give them what they deserve. If that’s the top wages at Arsenal then so be it.

“If everyone’s getting little rises here and there then it’s okay. I’m not a manager but you’ve got to juggle that.

“I remember when I was playing, I was near the top, and it’s a juggling thing. You’ve got to make sure that the players that influence the team the most are the players that get paid the most.”

Most fans would agree it is time to step up and do what it takes to retain Arsenal’s most influential players no matter the cost as the club is certainly not short of money.
