Did you know that unbeknownest to many: Sir Stanley Matthews played for Arsenal during World War 2?

It would have been the ‘wizard of dribble’, Sir Stanley Matthews’ 101st birthday on Monday 1st February which happened to coincide with the Winter Transfer Window Deadline. We all know that Sir Stanley was a great player for the likes of Stoke, Blackpool and England however we bet you didn’t know Sir Stanley played for Arsenal during World War 2? This extremely rare photo shows Sir Stanley donning the Arsenal jersey in a friendly during the war. The Arsenal historian, Ian Cook has even confirmed that this match was played at White Hart Lane as Highbury was at high risk of being bombed.
