Arsenal Interested In Signing Bayern Munich’s Defender?

There is a lot of criticism regarding Arsenal’s transfer policy and regarding the fact that Wenger is not more determined when it comes to signing superstars. Aside from the attack though, where a 20+ striker is indeed necessary to win the Premier League, the Gunners do not need that much money invested. Many forget that Mertesacker is a World Champion, Koscielny is one of the World’s top defenders and that Monreal and Bellerin are in the top 5 full-backs in the UK. Then there’s Gabriel who could be excellent once he receives more time on the pitch. The Brazilian has the right attitude on the field and despite some minor temper problems, is the kind of defender to take on players like Suarez, Aguero or any other name that comes to mind. Let’s not forget about Calum Chambers who did an amazing job whenever he was sent on the pitch. If he gets sent on loan to a Premier League club with Europa League ambitions, he will grow immensely.

The defense is pretty much covered unless injury interferes. With that in mind, Wenger might be looking to sign an experienced defender who could fill in the gaps and provide cover. According to the Daily Star, a solution could come from none other than Bayern Munich. It looks like the arrival of Mats Hummels to the German Champions will trigger Medhi Benatia’s departure. There will be no room for the 29-year-old center-back who has played just 20 games this season. Don’t think about this move as settling. Hummels, as good as he is, should have never been a top target for the Gunners. They desperately need fire power not defenders. If you look at things from that perspective, you understand why Benatia is a great idea. He is valued at £10million, he was on Wenger’s radar a while back, he has the experience and he could swap places with Mertesacker or Koscielny when needed. Arsenal could send Chambers on loan for a season and see how the whole Benatia thing turns out. He costs just as much as Gabriel and would probably carry himself pretty well in the Premier League. Once again, the Morocco captain should not be brought in as a member of the starting eleven but rather as a temporary replacement for Calum Chambers who, if treated right, could end up a top center-back.
