Arsenal Injury Update

We are only a few games into the 2016-2017 season and Arsenal already have major issues when it comes to injuries. Even if the transfer window was seen as a success as Wenger managed to add 4 important players to the lot, there are still a lot of concerns regarding the rest of the year. Let’s have a look at how Arsenal’s infirmary is looking right now and what kind of progress the players have made.

Aaron Ramsey – injured since August 14th. It looks like being in the Euros really caused some damage to the 25-year-old’s physique. He has been injured for 60 days and counting. The latest news provided by Metro indicates that he will be out for another 30 days as his hamstring is not recovering properly. If what the news says is true, we can expect Ramsey back in December at best. A hamstring injury is probably the worst after a cruciate ligament rupture as it tends to come back over and over again. If we add Ramsey’s overall downtime in 2016 it comes up to 90 days up until now. Fortunately, Xhaka, Cazorla and Elneny are doing a good job covering the gap left by the midfielder.

Francis Coquelin – injured since the 29th of September. The Frenchman is closing in on the one month mark due to an injury that seems related to last year’s events. Coquelin missed 64 days in 2015 after having to deal with knee problems. He is expected to return any day now. He was the main man next to Cazorla and even though Xhaka plays well, Coquelin still seems like he may be the first choice for Wenger’s starting eleven.

Olivier Giroud – injured since the 13th of September. The Frenchman has been struggling to get over this injury but to no avail. He has been out for 30 days now and counting. Hopefully, the ankle was not the part of the foot affected as it is well-known that Giroud already spent almost 3 months in the infirmary due to such a problem. Wenger did not provide an estimated recovery time but he did mention the Frenchman will miss the Saturday game against Swansea.

Lucas Perez – injured since the 29th September. There is no update on his return but the medical staff expects the forward to be up on his feet in a matter of days. There are no records of him missing games due to injuries so that is very likely to be the result of him staying away from complicated injuries.

Per Mertesacker – injured since the 20th of July. He had been declared unavailable in the summer and has remained injured for the past 85 days. Unfortunately, the German defender will miss the rest of the year even though he was scheduled to return at the beginning of December. The bad news is that his knee might not ever be the same given his age and physique. There were also some transfer rumors which were the result of his extended injury time. The Captain is unlikely to get time on the pitch earlier than January and fortunately Koscielny and Mustafi are getting better and better together.

Danny Welbeck – injured since the 8th of May. Welbeck tore his meniscus 158 days ago and will remain unavailable until March at best. Even though he is very gifted, the 25-year-old has been injured a lot in recent times. He spent 268 days recovering from injury last year and will add 200+ more days this season. Hopefully the medical staff will do some magic on him so he can return to proper form. It’s too early to tell if his return date is spot on but at least we should expect him to play a couple of games by the end of the 2016-2017 season.

Chuba Akpom – injured since the 8th of September. This very promising youngster picked up a back injury which will make him sit out the last games of 2016. He is expected to return in January when he should be fit to play for Wenger’s team. Fortunately he is only 21 and still has the time to fully recover.
