Arsenal In Negotiations For Carvalho

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho, after the Portuguese outfit lowered their transfer fee demand for the defensive midfielder in exchange for several fringe players on loan, according to the Metro.

The Gunners have not got off to the best start in the Barclays Premier League, with 4 points in two matches. But apart from the points, the worrying factor for Arsenal supporters is the lack of competitiveness in the squad. With other teams still strengthening, Arsenal need to improve their performances, and match up to the other big teams in the league. After posing a serious threat in the title race last season, supporters will be expecting a similar challenge or better this time around, but hoping the Gunners will be in a winning position this time around at the end.

Wenger wants to end the vacuum created in the defensive midfield position after Alex Song’s departure to Barcelona. The 22-year old, Carvalho began his career with Sporting as a youth player and signed on for the senior squad in 2011. His talent had been spotted by Europe’s best clubs, and now the Portuguese club have a host of teams wanting Carvalho in their lineup. Carvalho was also part of the 23-man Portugal squad that traveled to Brazil for the World Cup this year. He took part in all matches, before the country were knocked out early on.

Wenger will have to be at his most persuasive as Manchester United are seemingly also hot on Carvalho’s trail and are ready with a serious bid as the club’s transfer budget seems to be burning a hole in Van Gaal’s pocket.
