Arsenal start today in 3th after their slim, but imperative 1-0 win over QPR yesterday, 2 points ahead of Chelsea but having played 2 games more and on the same points as Spurs who have a game in hand on the Gunners. Chelsea are trying to qualify for the Champions League for the 10th season in a row whereas Arsenal are attempting to qualify for an even more impressive 14th season in a row and let’s not forget that the Gunners have done this while rebuilding the finances of the team for the long-term future and while they have had to sell the likes of Fabregas, Henry, RVP and Song, they have still kept their streak alive while it took Chelsea having to win last year’s Champions League and only then did they make it into the tournament this season even though Tottenham finished 4th.
Chelsea face United today with a better head-to-head record over United this season and they face rivals Spurs in the week in what will surely be a pivotal match in relation to the final season-ending top 4 positions and a Chelsea loss today and a draw with Spurs would most likely suit Arsenal the best. Arsenal face Wigan Athletic at home and Newcastle United away in their last 2 fixtures which both look tough as these 2 teams are both fighting for their Premier League lives so they will be bitterly contested matches as there is so much at stake financially for all the teams.
Chelsea face Spurs at home, Aston Villa away and Everton at home to finish the season with the Europa League final against Benifica sandwiched in between. Spurs have Chelsea away, Stoke away and Sunderland home so these 3 games are all tough as all the teams have everything to play for either Premier League survival or Champions League qualification.
Basically Arsenal need a little bit of help from Spurs and/or Chelsea and they need to win both of their last 2 games and if this happens the 14 year streak will continue. I think that Wenger will deliver Champions League football again next season – something that we seem to assume is automatic for us. We all hope it is automatic at least for this season until we bring in the major reinforcments promised to us in the summer.
