Arsenal Champions League Group Analysed

Arsenal have been drawn a tough group in this season’s Champions League. The Gunners would have hoped to avoid one of the big dogs from pot 1, but unfortunately their fate lies with Bayern Munich. Though the draw will provide 2 mouth watering games, Arsenal may find themselves ruing the tie.

Group F: Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Olympiakos, Dinamo Zagreb

Bayern Munich are one of the best teams in the world and will go into the competition as second favourites to win, only second to Barcelona. Pep Guardiola’s side won the German league last year and have eliminated the Gunners in two out of the last three seasons. Bayern captain Philipp Lahm told Uefa.com: “It’s great we are meeting two old friends, Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil, when we play Arsenal.” [Via BBC Sport]

Arsenal will have their work cut out with Bayern for sure, but could take comfort in the fact that their other two opponents are not as threatening.

Olympiakos are seeded from pot 3, and though they don’t look very spectacular on paper, all three of Arsenal’s Champions League away games against the Greek champions have ended in defeat – a stat Wenger will be extremely wary of.

As for Dinamo Zagreb, the champions of Croatia, they will go down as Arsenal’s best chance at completing a double result. The Croatian’s don’t have much to offer, but they beat Albanian champions Skenderbeu convincingly by 6 goals to 2 on aggregate in a play-off to qualify for the last 32.

Arsenal club secretary David Miles told BT Sport: “The draw started very ominously but we are relatively happy with it overall.”
