Arsenal Avoid Big Guns But Still Have Tough EFL Cup Quarter-Final Clash

After Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain secured Arsenal’s place in the EFL Cup quarter-finals with his fine brace which lead the Gunners past Jaap Stam’s Championship side Reading, Arsene Wenger was eagerly awaiting the completion of the remainder of the round of 16 matches to decide who would make the quarter finals.

On a night of a few surprises, West Ham knocked out Chelsea 2-1 at London Stadium and Manchester United won the second Manchester Derby of the year as they beat the Citizens 1-0 through Juan Mata’s goal and the last tie saw Southampton beat Sunderland 1-0 at Saint Mary’s with the ex United boss being sent to the stand after his Sunderland side were losing.

So Arsenal were relatively lucky when the draw happened on Sky Sports following the games as they managed to avoid Cup ties against rivals Manchester United plus they missed Liverpool who beat them in the first game of the season 4-3 at the Emirates. Arsenal did draw a home tie when the competition returns in just over a month and they will be facing Claude Puel’s tough Southampton side who are in great form. The psychological edge favours the Gunners who beat the Saints 2-1 at the Emirates when they played in the Premier League back on September 12th and Wenger will likely also to be happy to have avoided a London Derby against the improving West Ham side under Slaven Bilic.

So the full draw for the EFL Cup quarter-finals is:

Liverpool vs Leeds Utd

Manchester United vs West Ham United

Hull City vs Newcastle

Arsenal vs Southampton
